Vertigo
1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening. In class this week we learned about the amazing work the never Oscar winning director Alfred Hitchcock and his psychological thriller Vertigo. Based of the novel D'entre les morts and screenplay by Alec Coppel and Samuel A. Taylor. It shot in location in San Francisco California and on set at Paramount Studios. When the film was released it had mixed reviews but after years has passed it has been labeled as one of the greatest Hitchcock films with the use of dolly zoom and the effect of the "Vertigo" effect it had on audience. It has been named one of the greatest films ever made by AFI and ranked the 40th greatest movie of all time by Empire Magazine.
2) Find a related article (on the film, directed, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, ect.) You can use the library or the Internet. Cite the article or copy the url to your journal entry. Summarize in your own words the related article but do not plagiarize any content.
The article I found was on the star of the film who played 2 roles. The amazing talented Kim Novak. Kim Novak back in 1958 began working for Alfred Hitchcock films Vertigo after their leading actress Vera Miles became pregnant and to drop the film. She was offer the role without even requesting a screen test. Novak fell in love with the character and had no problem leaving Columbia pictures, well on for a pay raise of $1,250 a week. She got it and from their on out she became a star, a household name with that kind of paycheck. The most interesting fact of this article is that after watching the film in 2013, Novak was really disappointed with her performance. She said the characters were sometimes a little extra but some scenes were works of art. Novak now has disappeared from Hollywood and living in Oregon but the scandals still follow her. She had house fire in 2000 that destroyed half her home and her the book she was writing about her life. After fixing the house from the fire, in 2002 the same house was broken into stealing over 200000 dollars. Then into 2006, she was injured in a horse riding accident, breaking 4 ribs and getting a punctured lung. After a full recovery you think nothing else can happen to this poor lady but it did. In 2010, she released a statement regarding that she undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Now in 2014, she is cancer free. She now works as a painter, sculpture, and poet putting her love of art in full effect.
3) Relate the article to the screening
Kim Novak was really the heart of the film Vertigo. She played 2 characters for god sake. She had us all memorize in the film. That was all Hitchcock doing. He knew what Novak had and didn't even have to screen test, he knew that Novak had what he needed for Vertigo. Her expressions, her movements had us all memorize when watching the film. Even though her character did the leading man wrong we still root for her. That is what a good actress, director and screenplay does. Kim Novak has given us one but two roles that had us wanting more. Kim Novak did us all justice in Vertigo.
4) Write a critical analysis of the film
Overall I enjoyed the film Vertigo. One because I enjoy the thriller type movies because I grew up watching movies like Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Prom Night, Disturbia and many others that have stated that their looked at films like Hitchcock's for inspiration. The movie for my generation can seem very confusing but what I realized when watching the film that we went over in class time but no one left. Everyone waited for the film to finish even though he almost went over 30 minutes of class time. For me, if that interested in the ending of the film to stay to find out what happen. The movie has you in. Even after watching the movie me and my group of friends in class couldn't stop talking about what happen at the end. It kept us at the edge of our seats ands that what a great motion picture should do.
