Casablanca

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening
In our last class we discussed one of the most and well viewed motion picture Casablanca. It was number 3 on AFI Top 100 Films of all time right below Citizen Kane and The Godfather. It was nominated for 8 Academy Awards and took home 3 for Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Picture. It starred leads Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman both Academy award winners. The film is based on the play: "Everybody Comes to Rick's" By Murray Burnett and Joan Alison.

2) Find a related article (on the film, directed, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, ect.) You can use the library or the Internet. Cite the article or copy the url to your journal entry. Summarize in your own words the related article but do not plagiarize any content.
The article I found was on the scandal that was Ingrid Bergman when the world found out about her affair with playboy Roberto Rossellini and many other famous friends. Ingrid was happily married to Dr. Peter Lindstrom and had a young daughter Pia but Ingrid had a secrets a lot of secrets. Even on the set of Casablanca, Humphrey Bogart’s then-wife Mayo Methot accused him of cheating with Ingrid while making the film which led to there untimely divorce. It started in 1949 when Ingrid, penned a "fan" letter to Rossellini, offering her services as a multi-lingual thesp. Rossellini dropped the five women he was sleeping with including his star, the Anna Magnani. He fired Anna from his next production, Stromboli, promptly re-writing the juicy lead role for Ingrid. Sparks flew between Ingrid and her new director, with Rossellini betting a pal he could bed Ingrid within two weeks. Their fell in love and made films and children together. Before you knew it, the news was out and Ingrid left her family in America to join her new love in Italy. Both she and Rossellini soon filed to dissolve their respective marriages. The affair and then marriage with Rossellini created a scandal that forced her to remain in Europe until 1956, when she made a successful Hollywood return in Anastasia for which she won her second Academy Award, as well as the forgiveness of her fans. Ingrid had said many times that she has no regrets of what happen, she wouldn't live her life worrying about what was begin said about her.

3) Relate the article to the screening
The relation is the love of both Bogart and Bergman. Many reports have shown that there was no real acting going on set, it was true love. I honesty feel that with the chemistry of both Bogart and Bergman the story for me wouldn't be there. Without Bogart and Bergman, the movie would never be as much as a hit as it is today. The casting agent should be applauded for, for making such a smart call on these two actors.

4) Write a critical analysis of the film
As a child growing up and always hearing about Casablanca and how epic it was, I didn't except it to be what it actually was. It was kind of lackluster for the hype I've heard. For example, I thought Casablanca was the plane in the ending scene or just a made up lovely name for the movie title, not a town in Africa?? I never saw that coming. For me the ending was really upsetting. Their didn't run off with each other... she left with the man she not in love with and the shooting at the end was just really awkward for me. It comes out of left field. I can see why the movie has the legacy that it has. Its a love story that never ends, its keeps loving even though neither of them are together.
