Apocalypse Now

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening
In class we discussed the epic war film, Apocalypse Now from 1979. Set during the Vietnam War and had huge stars in the film like Martin Sheen, Marlon Brando, and Robert Duvall and was directed and produced by Francis Ford Coppola. The film was loosely based off the Heart of Darkness, written by Joseph Conrad. The screenplay was also by Coppola and John Milius. After the release of the film, it was a huge success and was nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. The film is deemed as historically significant and was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry in 2000.

2) Find a related article (on the film, directed, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, ect.) You can use the library or the Internet. Cite the article or copy the url to your journal entry. Summarize in your own words the related article but do not plagiarize any content.

My article was on the making of the film Apocalypse Now. The film was suppose to be finish filming within 14 weeks in the Philippines in the beginning of the spring of 1976 but actors, weathers, drugs and disasters were all against the film. First, Coppola fired his leading man Harvey Keitel after only two weeks and went with Martin Sheen who at the time was facing drinking problems. When Sheen arrived, it was like World War 4. Coppola was writing the film as the film went along. Then a typhoon hit and production was shut down for short time. After a whole month back in the states, Coppola had to rethink and decided to go back to the jungle. Some crew went while others opted out and stayed. Work now began on the sequences revolving around Marlon Brando. Guess what, he showed up to shooting like a giant whale at 300 pounds. He was so big many things about character changed as well as storyline because he was suppose to be like a warrior and he look like a baby walrus. He also couldn't fit in any costumes. Worst, he hadn't learn any of his lines and production was shut down for a week. That's right... a week. After that, Brando showed one day with no hair and told Coppola that his scenes should all be improved and his scenes should be filmed in shadow and in all black to hide his huge belly. To get in worst, Martin Sheen suffered a heart attack in the middle of shooting and Coppola felt it was his fault and suffer a epileptic seizure. He later stated many time that shooting this movie was a war in its self. This later caused a riff in the friendship of Marlon Brando and Francis Ford Coppola. When trying to get info about the shooting of the film, Brando told a reporter that "why are you making a film about that fat fuck, he owes me $2m." Obviously, Brando was having issues with his royalty checks from Coppola. "You tell that fat fuck that if he pays me the two million, you can film me taking a shit." With that a friendship was ruined.

3) Relate the article to the screening
Overall, the article takes about the strain of making the film but when you look at the film in the whole you almost think there are lying to you. The film from the costumes to the acting (expect Brando) had the feel that this epic film was going to make a huge impact on society and film history. While making it, many thought this film was a huge fail. Even with the negative wall around film, it become a cult favorite and watch by many today.

4) Write a critical analysis of the film
Overall, at first I really disliked Apocalypse Now but towards the end I found my self emotional invested into the film. From the set to the characters to the story... I loved it! One part of the film I disliked and probably many others agree to is the horrible acting and just all around negative portrayal Marlon Brando had in this film. He was almost unwatchable at times. I see Marlon Brando as one of the greatest because of his films like Streetcar, On the Water font and The Godfather that it makes me want to forget that he was in this movie so that I can remember him as the great legend he was and not what this movie made him up to be.

The Godfather

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.
In our last class we discussed the one of kind film The Godfather. It was made in 1972, was a big blockbuster hit and help bring out the new career of Francis Ford Coppola after trying to make it big with 7 films. It went on to be nominated for 11 Oscars taking home 3 for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Leading Actor. It was winner of 5 Golden Globes and a Grammy award.

My article was on the Oscars controversy  that follow The Godfather at the 1973 Oscars. The biggest red flag was Marlon Brando declining his Oscar for Best Actor and sending instead American Indian Rights activist Sacheen Littlefeather, in full clothing to state that Brando was not accepting his award due to Hollywood and television depiction of American Indians. Now, do to that no one but the winner can accept awards on their behalf. Strike 2 happened when Al Pacino boycotted the ceremony, as he felt he was begin insulted by not begin nominated for Best Actor, but for Best Supporting Actor even though noting he had more screen time then his co star winner Marlon Brando. Just a fun fact, Paramount pictures made it their mission to make sure Marlon Brando was the only actor in the film to secure a Best Actor nomination, and others be put in as Supporting roles. Strike 3 for The Godfather was a last minute decision by the Academy to take away Nino Rota's score due too, finding out he used parts of music from Eduardo De Filippo's 1958 movie, Forunella.

3) Relate the article to the screening.

Oscars, Oscars, and more Oscars. The film really showcased talent with the really hardworking cast that came tagged with the movie. Marlon Brando and his movie family really took the scene and had you in awe with the realism of the film. The movies score was really powerful, its sadden many that it  was disqualify from the Oscar race. Overall, the films plot twists, camera lighting and angles and overall effect really makes it know that the film should be on top of everyone best movies of all time list.

4) Write a critical analysis of the film

And the Oscars goes to... Cabaret but in actuality... The Godfather? Cabaret, directed Bob Fosse, set the record for most Oscar wins without winning the big prize of Best Picture, due to The Godfather taking it home. The Godfather even though only taking home 3 awards, its still recognized as the most acclaimed and beloved films of all time. Despite having three nominees for the Best Supporting Actor award, all were defeated by Joel Grey in Cabaret. The awards for the Best Director, Best Sound and Best Film Editing also went to Cabaret. Overall, even though Cabaret looks like a clear cut winner of film of 1972 but The Godfather has really become a film like no other. I would have to say, that without a doubt one of the greatest films of all time. It deserves a spot on top of the mountain of best films for the history of time. From the plot, to characters, and the set, keeps people wanting more. Its showcases that this is the best film ever!

The Graduate

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening
In our last class we discussed the film The Graduate. The film was directed by Mike Nichols and the screenplay was by Buck Henry and Calder Willingham. It was a huge hit at the box office. It received 7 Oscars nominations. One for Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Leading Actor, Best Leading Actress, and Best Supporting Actress and took home the award for Best Director. The Graduate was known as one of the first true youth rebellion films and was also famous for the use of overlapping cuts.

2) Find a related article (on the film, directed, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, ect.) You can use the library or the Internet. Cite the article or copy the url to your journal entry. Summarize in your own words the related article but do not plagiarize any content.
The article was founded on the making of The Graduate especially casting. Mike Nichols wanted Doris Day for Mrs. Robinson and Robert Redford for Ben Braddock. Neither of that happen. Doris Day turned down the role due to nudity in certain scenes. Patricia Neal turned down the role due to just recovering from a stroke and didn't feel ready to accept such a major role. After saying no to Ingrid Bergman and Audrey Hepburn and Jane Fonda the producers felt that Anna Bancroft would be prefect as Mrs. Robinson. For her younger daughter, Elaine, casting was a major issue. Patty Duke, Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, and Joan Collins all turn down the role. After a shortlist of Ann-Margret, Goldie Hawn and Natalie Wood, the role went to Katharine Ross. When it came to role of Ben, Robert Redford and Warren Beatty were among the top choices. Beatty turned it down do to a prior commitment and Mike Nichols believed that Redford didn't have the underdog flair that Dustin Hoffman had. Nichols really enjoyed Hoffman true raw talent during a cold reading with Katharine Ross, a love scene from the movie and Nichols loved Hoffman's awkwardness.

3) Relate the article to the screening
Overall, the article really gave us a outlook on the casting that went into The Graduate. As someone who wants to go in to casting for films and television, this film casting would of gave me a head ache. Having already a idea of who you want and then seeing hundreds of actors and actresses must be exhausting. One in particle is Dustin Hoffman. Hoffman was not well known and was given a role of such depth and made a name for himself just because one person gave him that chance. Also Anne Bancroft and Katharine Ross gave me life in their performances as mother and daughter. All together many people believe that the casting of the film is one of the many reason the film click together. Even Mike Nichols believe so.

4) Write a critical analysis of the film
Overall, I can sit here and say that I loved the film The Graduate. From the casting, the production shots to the dialogue had me into the film the entire time. Its really a great film so people in college, its speaks volumes to us in our new generation. Again I would like to make it known that this film wouldn't be the amazing film that it is without the acting of Hoffman, Bancroft and Ross. I don't believe that movie would be as successful as it is today without the three of them.

Vertigo

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening. In class this week we learned about the amazing work the never Oscar winning director Alfred Hitchcock and his psychological thriller Vertigo. Based of the novel D'entre les morts and screenplay by Alec Coppel and Samuel A. Taylor. It shot in location in San Francisco California and on set at Paramount Studios. When the film was released it had mixed reviews but after years has passed it has been labeled as one of the greatest Hitchcock films with the use of dolly zoom and the effect of the "Vertigo" effect it had on audience. It has been named one of the greatest films ever made by AFI and ranked the 40th greatest movie of all time by Empire Magazine.

The article I found was on the star of the film who played 2 roles. The amazing talented Kim Novak. Kim Novak back in 1958 began working for Alfred Hitchcock films Vertigo after their leading actress Vera Miles became pregnant and to drop the film. She was offer the role without even requesting a screen test. Novak fell in love with the character and had no problem leaving Columbia pictures, well on for a pay raise of $1,250 a week. She got it and from their on out she became a star, a household name with that kind of paycheck. The most interesting fact of this article is that after watching the film in 2013, Novak was really disappointed with her performance. She said the characters were sometimes a little extra but some scenes were works of art. Novak now has disappeared from Hollywood and living in Oregon but the scandals still follow her. She had house fire in 2000 that destroyed half her home and her the book she was writing about her life. After fixing the house from the fire, in 2002 the same house was broken into stealing over 200000 dollars. Then into 2006, she was injured in a horse riding accident, breaking 4 ribs and getting a punctured lung. After a full recovery you think nothing else can happen to this poor lady but it did. In 2010, she released a statement regarding that she undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Now in 2014, she is cancer free. She now works as a painter, sculpture, and poet putting her love of art in full effect.

3) Relate the article to the screening

Kim Novak was really the heart of the film Vertigo. She played 2 characters for god sake. She had us all memorize in the film. That was all Hitchcock doing. He knew what Novak had and didn't even have to screen test, he knew that Novak had what he needed for Vertigo. Her expressions, her movements had us all memorize when watching the film. Even though her character did the leading man wrong we still root for her. That is what a good actress, director and screenplay does. Kim Novak has given us one but two roles that had us wanting more. Kim Novak did us all justice in Vertigo.

4) Write a critical analysis of the film

Overall I enjoyed the film Vertigo. One because I enjoy the thriller type movies because I grew up watching movies like Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Prom Night, Disturbia and many others that have stated that their looked at films like Hitchcock's for inspiration. The movie for my generation can seem very confusing but what I realized when watching the film that we went over in class time but no one left. Everyone waited for the film to finish even though he almost went over 30 minutes of class time. For me, if that interested in the ending of the film to stay to find out what happen. The movie has you in. Even after watching the movie me and my group of friends in class couldn't stop talking about what happen at the end. It kept us at the edge of our seats ands that what a great motion picture should do.
